Brahma Care Guides

Practical growth, nutrition, and milestone guidance for raising healthy Brahmas.

The Ultimate Brahma Growth & Care Guide

Because Brahmas grow slowly to reach their massive size, their nutritional needs change significantly across their development stages. At Savvy Hatchery, we believe in natural, healthy growth, which is why all of our birds are fed strictly NON-GMO feed.

Feeding Stages

Stage 1: Day Old to 6 Weeks

Feed: Chick Starter Crumb (18%–20% Protein)

High protein is essential here for rapid early tissue and organ development. Chicks must be kept in a brooder with a heat lamp at 32°C, dropping by 2°C each week until they are fully feathered.

Stage 2: 6 Weeks to 18 Weeks (POL)

Feed: Grower Ration / Pellets (15%–16% Protein)

The most critical stage for Brahmas. Do NOT rush them onto layer feed. They need lower protein and lower calcium to focus purely on building their massive bone structure slowly and safely.

Stage 3: 18+ Weeks (Layer Stage)

Feed: Layer Pellets or Mash (16% Protein + Calcium)

Once they reach Point of Lay (POL), switch to a layer feed which contains the extra calcium needed for strong eggshells. Provide grit and fresh water at all times.

Life Milestones & Expectations

  • Harvesting / Meat: Brahma roasters are generally ready for eating around 6 to 8 months of age.
  • Point of Lay (POL): Brahmas typically begin laying between 7 to 9 months of age, depending on season and light availability.
  • Egg Yield & Size: A healthy Brahma hen will lay approximately 150 to 200 eggs annually, medium to large in size (averaging 55–60g).
  • Winter Production: The Brahma's heavy coat often allows them to continue producing eggs through the colder months.
